Acoustic Electric Guitar

An acoustic electric guitar is a hybrid of two types of guitar: the acoustic and the electric. The guitars are designed as acoustic musical instruments and can be played without the use of an external amplifier. However, these instruments are fitted with a pick-up and onboard electronics that allow them to be plugged into an amplifier when needed.

The acoustic electric guitar solves many problems that acoustic players run into when having to play over a “plugged in” band. Using an aftermarket acoustic pick-up often results in problems with feedback unless a great deal of care is taken. The acoustic electric is designed to solve many of these issues.

Most major guitar manufacturers make at least one acoustic electric guitar. They have become very popular instruments, especially for singer-songwriters and folk musicians. Many musicians will use accessory pedals to create sounds that can only be made through the sound of an acoustic.
